It was a big day out West with both Wool YFC Bessie Thomas and Emma Turner hosting their events.

Sheep and cattle farmers in far-west NSW kicked off their work boots for the inaugural Barefoot Bowls at Burragan event at Wool YFC Bessie Thomas’s farm on Saturday. Thirty drought affected locals travelled from as far as Tilpa, 115km north-east on the Darling River, to compete in the round robin tournament. The drinks were cold and the competition was hot as teams bowled for the coveted “Occasional Trophy” – a trophy for those occasions where you might occasionally need a trophy.

“Everyone had a fantastic evening and it made us all realise we need to do it more often,” Bessie said. “We had Marie Kelley, Rural Adversity Mental Health Co-Ordinator from Ivanhoe, Rural Chaplains David and Robin Pullen from the Salvation Army, Broken Hill, and lots of food, nibbles, and beautiful dinner and dessert. I think the relaxed, social atmosphere was just what everyone needed, as drought times are so draining and demanding.” Many thanks to everyone who helped pulled off a great night!

Congratulations to YFC Meg Rice who was offered and has accepted a law clerk position with a Canberra Law firm. This will see her specialise in Rural Succession Planning when she graduates as a lawyer next year.

Meg Rice is heading to Canberra

Rarely a week goes by without at least one of our YFC being recognised for their contributions to agriculture and rural and regional Australia. In this blog  our Young Farming Champions identify awards as a significant platform to foster their career journey and reflect on how nominating for an award is an important step on many YFCs career journeys, expanding far beyond a pretty trophy.

Our YFC know it is important to grab opportunity with both hands, to travel and navigate foreign environments, meet new people, develop cultural sensitivity, shift perspective and see where someone else is coming from. In this blog Argentina and Australia – Our Young Farming Champions broaden their perspective, cultural sensitivity and appreciation., YFC Lucy Collingridge, Meg Rice and Anika Molesworth who travelled to Argentina in recent months share their ideas and learn from the South American country, and in doing so opened their eyes to the differences and similarities between Argentine and Australian agriculture.

Young Farming Champions Muster August 2018 Week 3

This week’s top stories from Young Farming Champions across the country.

In the Field

It’s been great week for our Art4Agriculture Young Farming Champions (YFC), fresh off the excitement of last weekend’s YFC and Teachers workshop in the Hunter Valley.

Teachers have declared  interacting with the the Young Farming Champions the highlight of the workshop. Equally the Young Farming Champions  valued been able to partner with teachers to gain a clearer understanding of the curriculum , the perspective of teachers and the role The Archibull Prize plays in empowering teachers to meet the needs of their students. All in all the workshop was declared a huge success and a mutual lovefest

Peta Bradley

Young Farming Champion Peta Bradley volunteered to be the “talent’ for the Teacher Video interview technique session

Well done to our incredible Rice YFC Erika Heffer who harnessed her enthusiasm from the workshop and put her new skills into practice right away with a great interview on ABC Radio on Tuesday.

If you tuned into Anne Delaney on ABC Riverina Breakfast you might have heard Erika speak on behalf of the Ricegrowers Association of Australia about their “Water for Wildlife and Rice” campaign. Erika was involved in running a Pozible campaign to source funds for the idea, which is a “collaborative farming program that combines regional farming know-how with water supporters and owners of agricultural land to produce food and fibre in conjunction with the provision of ecosystem services.”

Read more about Water for Wildlife and Rice here

The Pozible campaign was unfortunately unsuccessful in raising the necessary funds for it come to fruition, but Erika says the team will continue looking for ways to raise capital this great idea. Good luck and well done, Erika!

In Western NSW our “Woolly” YFCs Emma Turner and Bessie Thomas are working on seperate ideas to boost the spirits and provide social opportunities for locals living through the current drought.

Emma is hosting a Women’s Health Day in Ivanhoe, NSW, with the exact details and date yet to be announced. Looking forward to finding out more Emma!

Bessie is hosting a Barefoot Bowls and Bocce mental health day at her sheep property near Wilcannia, NSW. It’s a opportunity for locals to take an afternoon off from the large workload of feeding stock through dry times, kick off their work boots and relax with some friendly competition on the bowling green (which is currently very brown).

Bessie Bowling Green

Great work on supporting your local communities and farmers, Emma and Bessie! Good luck!

In Melbourne this week Beef YFCs Steph Fowler and Jasmine Green attended the International Congress of Meat Science and Technology (ICoMST) conference alongside more than 500 attendees from across the globe. It’s the first time ICoMST has been on Aussie soil in 30 years.

ICMST

Steph, who has attended the conference several times overseas, said “it was great to see Down Under so well represented with lecturers and post doc students from all major agricultural universities represented, along with CSIRO, DPI (Vic, WA and NSW) and industry.”

“A highlight for me was definitely the conversations with researchers from different places. I learnt a lot about what’s going on in my area of research in Ireland, New Zealand and Germany and hopefully will get the chance to collaborate formally on some new projects with them,” Steph said.

Jasmine Green enjoyed learning about new and interesting research happening in the meat industry. “There are now new ways to measure eating quality across various meat types, concepts around smart packaging and traceability from farm to consumer, discussion around how to combat food “fraud” and robotics/automation,” Jasmine said. “It was excellent!”

It’s AgQuip time! Australia’s largest agricultural field day is on this week in Gunnedah, NSW, and two of our YFC are heading that way!

Grain farmer and YFC Marlee Langfield will be selling merchandise and hosting our Picture You in Agriculture Facebook page from the Case IH stand  and Wool YFC and Local Lands Service (LLS) animal biosecurity officer Lucy Collingridge will be representing North West LLS and Cotton YFC Casey Onus will be talking all things Precision Agriculture at the Landmark stand.

Marlee Langfield.JPG

“My role is based around helping landholders manage the pest animals on their property and our display at AgQuip will be on best practice to manage feral animal populations to reduce the impact of these burdens on the landholders,” Lucy said.

“We will have a feral pig trap, multiple animal displays [Bowman’s Taxidermy are bringing a mounted pig, fox and two deers], lots of information about best practice pest animal management, and information on the new North West pest animal plan.”

If you’re at AgQuip this week be sure to look out for Marlee and Lucy!

There are lots of good news stories coming out of schools this week as our Art4Agriculture Archibull Prize school visits continue.

Tuesday saw Cotton YFC Sharna Holman visit Dakabin State High School where she spoke to a mix of art and agriculture students participating in the Archibull Prize. “I loved my visit!” Sharna said. “It was fantastic to visit a school that reminded me so much of my own going through high school. They were a great group of students and I especially loved seeing the students get engaged with the biosecurity activity of thinking of biosecurity practices which could help make up their School’s farm biosecurity plan.”

Meg Rice MacIntyre HS (2)

Meg Rice and students from McIntyre High School work shopped the careers from A to Z in the Australian grains industry

On Thursday Northern Tablelands LLS YFC Meg Rice visited McIntyre High School in Inverell, speaking to agriculture students in Years 9. “It was a wonderful opportunity to share all the experiences that I have been offered within the agricultural industry.” Meg said. “The students were particularly interested in my recent to visit Cambodia and Lao, as part of a University of New England study tour, fand how culture has a large impact upon agricultural practices.”

Meg Rice

Wool Young Farming Champion and Wool Classer Deanna Johnston visited Beaudesert State High School to share her career journey  . Deanna was overjoyed to swamped by students after her talk asking how to get into wool classing.  Deanna tells us Beaudesert have taken robotics to the next level with their Archibull Prize entry this year. If the end result is half as exciting as the titbits she shared with us. Wow do they have an Archie people will be talking about across the world

Young Farming Champions Muster July 2018 Week 4

This week’s news from our Young Farming Champions across the country

In the Field

It’s been all action for our Wool Young Farming Champions (YFC) this week with the annual Australian Sheep and Wool show on in Bendigo, Victoria. Three of our “Woolly” YFC, Jo Newton, Sam Wan and Melissa Henry, and our newest Rice YFC Erica Heffer converged on the industry’s biggest event of the year and we’ve had some top stories emerge:

The amazing Sam Wan spent the weekend stewarding and speaking at the Soils Make Sense careers forum at the Careers and Technology Hub.

It’s been a huge month for Sam who has been named as one of three finalists in The National Council of Wool Selling Brokers of Australian Annual Wool Broker Awards. She has also been recognised with the One Elders Operational Performance Award for July.  Read the full story here.  Great work, Sam!

If you’re in the world of wool you may have heard Sam speak at a recent growers function for Elders South Australia, or heard her as one of the wool auctioneer’s interviewed on the Victorian Country Hour at the last wool sale of the selling season in Melbourne last week. Take a listen here

Wool YFC and coloured wool grower Melissa Henry judged the Black and Coloured sheep section and the coloured fleece section at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show. With 55 sheep entered from 8 exhibitors it was a tough task and Melissa said “The line ups for Grand Champion Ram, Ewe and Lamb were crackers!” One of her weekend highlights was the chance to see so many different breeds of sheep that you normally only see in books. We’re rapt you had such a great weekend, Mel!

Youth Voices Leadership Team Chair Jo Newton was busy hosting our Picture You In Agriculture social media channels in between stewarding merino sheep competitions.

At Friday night’s Young Stud Masters Muster Jo was one of six wool representatives hosting a panel aimed at inspiring young people into agriculture. The New Breed initiative launch, supported by Stock & Land, discussed topics including attracting young people into the wool industry, rebranding agriculture in schools, Ag-Tech, and the culture of agriculture. Way to go, Jo!

Jo

Jo also caught up with our newest Rice YFC Erica Heffer who spent the weekend stewarding as part of her Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) Rural Achievers Experience.

Check out this great video interview with Erica about her experiences at the Sheep and Wool Show here:

From country Victoria to the top of Western Australia, Cotton YFC Alexander Stephens is possibly the nation’s most famous cotton picker this week! Alexander is about to harvest Western Australia’s first commercial cotton crop in nearly fifty years and at the time of writing, his story had been shared across Facebook almost 300 times. All eyes in the Aussie cotton industry are on this exciting and innovative venture right now. Read more about it here:

Cotton YFC and agronomist Martin Murray is also making headlines this week, in the world of bees! Check out his story via the Young Farmers Business Project, where Martin talks about acquiring his first hive of these amazing winged creatures that keep the world of agriculture running. As part of her work with the Argentine Agriculture Minister and the Australian Minister for Agriculture, Anika will be visiting farms, running workshops with young farmers, presenting on global agricultural challenges and opportunities and preparing a report for the Ministers on the vision of strong and resilient farming sectors.  We can’t wait to hear more about your trip Anika!

Keiley OBrien

as you can see from Keiley’s quote she was impressed

“ WOW what an event. We learnt a lot & found it extremely relevant given the current re-structure out contracting business is going through. Great networking op as well. Would highly recommend! #YFBP”

Archibull Prize school visits are well underway and several YFC are heading into classrooms this week. These visits are exciting days for students but for YFC they are an absolute highlight of the year. The chance to get out of the paddock, office or research lab and into schools to share their life’s passion is a thrilling and rewarding experience. This week:

Wool YFC and newly graduated vet Dione Howard is visiting Bombala High School.

Grain YFC Dan Fox is visiting Kellyville High School and Granville Boys High School.

And Casey Onus is visiting Oxley High School.

Good luck everyone!

What a way to see Australia, driving very big toys! We can’t wait to hear more about cotton picking on the Ord River, Alexander.

Wool Young Farming Champion Emma Turner spent last week home on the station collecting data for her honours thesis looking at the differences between 6 monthly and 12 monthly shearing. It involved lots of colour:

Youth Voices Leadership Team Chair Jo Newton will be hosting our social media pages this week. Head on over to our Picture You in Agriculture Facebook page to follow along and enjoy Jo’s insights from the Dairy Research Foundation Symposium and  Australian Sheep and Wool Show in Bendigo

YFC Anika Molesworth jetted off to Argentina this morning. By invitation from the Argentine Agriculture Minister, Anika will be visiting farms, running workshops with young farmers and presenting on global agricultural challenges and opportunities.

This program coincides with the G20 meeting in Buenos Aires, and part of her brief is to collaborate with young South American farmers to prepare a report for the Ministers on the vision of strong and resilient farming sectors, enabling young farmers, and promoting future industry leaders. Anika will be working with Australian Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud and visiting farmer groups to discuss collaborative relationships between countries and tackling the industry’s big challenges.

YFC Sam Coggins has just returned from Myanmar where he reviewed three Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) projects looking at pulses, soil mapping and nitrogen fertiliser efficiency. Young Farming Champions Muster July 2018 Week 2

This week’s Young Farming Champions stories from around the country

IN THE FIELD

This week Wool Young Farming Champion and social media superstar Emma Turner will be taking over our Art4Agriculture social media channels and showings us life on a sheep station in outback NSW. Emma’s continuing work on her Honours Research Project into six-monthly shearing of sheep and we’re super keen to find out exactly what’s involved. Keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook pages this week to catch up with Emma and her beloved sheep.

IMG_6080.jpg

Cotton YFC, farmer and agronomist Emma Ayliffe has finished shearing and lamb marking her first drop of lambs on her farm in Central West NSW.

This week Emma is working with her cotton farming clients to prepare their paddocks for planting next year’s cotton crop.

Cotton farmers are currently adding phosphorous fertiliser to the soil where it is needed, creating rows for planting and furrows for irrigation and preparing their nitrogen budgets.

Farmers predict soil temperature in the Riverina will have reached the required 14 degrees C for planting cotton in about six weeks.

You can find out how a cotton crop is grown here

And because safety is always the most important thing, Emma is also renewing her St Johns first aid certificate this week!

YFC and grain farmer Dan Fox says farmers in his region of the NSW Riverina are very grateful for the 44 mm of rain they received in June, with Dan’s family planting wheat, barley, canola and lentils for the 2018 season.

Dan Fox (2).JPG

Dan is looking forward to attending the Victorian No Till Farming Conference this Thursday and Friday. Dan says it’s a great opportunity to learn from and network with other farmers who share the Fox family ethos of No Till Regenerative Farming.

YFC and grain farmer Marlee Langfield is attending the annual Innovation Generation Conference in Wagga Wagga, NSW, this week.

Marlee at Innovation Generation

In far-west NSW, Wool YFC and sheep and cattle farmer Bessie Thomas is still hoping for more rain. In an average year her animals would usually eat grass growing in the paddocks but while drought conditions continue, Bessie’s family is feeding their sheep and cattle a mix of grains, seeds and hay every day. This requires driving the feed around to each watering point in every paddock and it’s a time-consuming job that doesn’t allow for much other farm work and maintenance to continue.

YFC Tim Eyes hosted students from The Lakes College at his farm. They dug for potatoes, collected fresh eggs, picked oranges from the tree and milked Joyce the dairy cow. For Tim, who has entertained children both in mainstream schools and at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, hosting the TLC students was an enjoyable and eye-opening experience. Read the full story here

Anika will be working with Australian Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud and visiting farmer groups to discuss collaborative relationships between countries and tackling the industry’s big challenges. Happy travels and have fun, Anika!

YFC Nellie Evans, Wool YFC Adele Offley and YFC Dr Steph Fowler are going into schools in Young, NSW, for the Kreative Koalas program where they will be engaging with students about SDG Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption.

Rain, glorious rain! This beautiful sight brought slight relief to some of our New South Wales based Young Farming Champions who are currently battling drought.
